Mindy settled her pink Kate Spade bag on top of the stack of files and electronics in her lap. She wanted to be as prepared as possible for her first meeting with the new immigration lawyer.

She smiled a bright smile of hope at the man in front of her. “So?” she said. “Where would you like me to begin?”

The gray-haired lawyer on the opposite side of the table rearranged his tie over his slightly expansive gut, took up his pen, and prepared to make notes on the yellow pad in front of him. “Start at the beginning, Ms. Rose,” he said, nodding.

“Call me Mindy,” she said with a nose wrinkle. “Well, the issue is Kate Morahan, an illegal alien who I happen to know is working illegally in Oakland. I’d like to get her deported.”

The attorney looked up and put his pen down. “This is not about your own immigration status?”

“Me? Heavens no,” Mindy said. “I’m an American, born and raised.”

The attorney sat back and looked at her with interest. “Continue.”

“Well, Kate’s an illegal. That’s all you really need to know, right? We have to get her out of here.”

“Undocumented worker is the preferred phrase, Ms. Rose,” the lawyer said. Then he looked at her a little distastefully. “Has this woman done anything to cause you particular concern?”

Mindy shifted in her seat and gave a derisive laugh. “What hasn’t she done?” she asked. “She tried to shut down my business. She’s threatened me. And then she quit!”

The attorney blinked. “Quit?”

“She worked for me for seven years,” Mindy explained.

The attorney gave a half smile and stared at his notepad. Then he looked up at her, trying to keep a straight face. “Ms. Rose, I need to point out to you that you, yourself, employed this woman. You have also been breaking the law.”

Mindy closed her half-opened mouth and glanced uncomfortably at the stack of paraphernalia in her lap. “I don’t care,” she suddenly announced. “She’s illegal, and I want her gone.”

The attorney glanced out the window. Then he looked back at her intensely. “Look, I don’t do revenge cases,” he said. “Especially when I can’t explain to the U.S. government why my client was illegally hiring undocumented workers herself.”

“Fine,” said Mindy, standing up with a lurch. She clutched at her files. “Fine!” she repeated. Turning on her kitten heel, she stomped towards the door and yanked the doorknob open. Then she glanced over her shoulder. “I hate people like you,” she announced. “All high-minded and…whatever!” Dramatically, Mindy then made her exit.

One way or another, she’d get rid of Kate. Even if she had to do it herself.
